Kim Box, President and CEO
Kim Box, President and CEO, previously served as a Vice President at Hewlett-Packard, where she led a $1 billion organization of over 10,000 HP employees and 5,000 contractors in more than 100 locations. She has over 29 years of experience in the high-tech industry.
Ms. Box serves on the American River Bank Board of Directors and the American Red Cross Capital-Region Chapter Board of Directors. She is an international public speaker and award- winning author of Woven Leadership: The Power of Diversity to Transform your Organization for Success. Before joining Gatekeeper Innovation, Ms. Box worked for eight years with start-up companies and led a project to produce an Emmy-winning documentary, Collision Course -Teen Addiction Epidemic. She graduated from California State University, Chico with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a minor in computer science. Ms. Box also attended the executive development program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Deborah Simpson, Chairman of the Board
Deborah Simpson, Chairman of the Board and a Co-Founder of Gatekeeper Innovation, has been the primary driving force behind the company. An expert in directing strategic and developmental growth, Mrs. Simpson has taken numerous companies from start-up to successful public offering, and has served as advisor on more than $1 billion worth of M&A transactions with companies such as Adaptec, ARGO Systems, Auspex, and Kalpana. Prior to Gatekeeper Innovation, Mrs. Simpson was President & CEO of MetaSound, Inc. She raised $26 million in angel and venture funding for MetaSound. Prior to leading MetaSound, she was a Partner, COO & CFO of The Brenner Group, which focused on servicing many start-up organizations. Mrs. Simpson was also as Manager at Arthur Andersen, where she managed tax and consulting engagements for high technology companies. She has also raised more than $100 million in public offerings. Mrs. Simpson graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.B.A. in accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant. Mrs. Simpson has also co-founded a non-profit, EYE in America, which focuses on helping teens with addiction, bullying and teen suicide.
Joseph Simpson, Founder, Board Director and Chief Technical Officer
Joseph Simpson is the founder and Chief Technical Officer of Gatekeeper. Joseph manages product innovation and market development for Gatekeeper Innovation. He began to develop abuse-deterrent medication packaging during his senior year of high school after witnessing first-hand the danger and destruction of medication misuse and abuse. With persistence and dedication, Mr. Simpson has led the development of the Safer Lock’s prototypes and improvements in customer-responsive design. Mr. Simpson has received many awards including the SARTA Entrepreneur of the Year. His innovative solutions helped the Gatekeeper team win a national award for Top 5 Technology to Reduce Prescription Drug Abuse. Mr. Simpson earned a degree in Marketing from California State University, Sacramento. He is involved in many charitable causes and serves as co-founder and VP of Marketing/Support Expert with EYE in America, a public charity focused on helping teens with addiction, bullying and teen suicide.
Nathan Langley, Co-Founder, Vice President Business Development
Nathan Langley is Co‐Founder and Vice President of Business Development at Gatekeeper Innovation. A thought leader on prescription medication misuse and abuse, Mr. Langley is a part of the National Pain Care Forum and the Abuse Deterrent Coalition, which collectively develop initiatives and drive legislation to improve pain care and reduce prescription drug abuse in the U.S. Mr. Langley received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Entrepreneurship from California State University, Sacramento. He was recognized by the Sacramento Business Journal as a 2016 “Top 40 Under 40” honoree.
Zachary Burkes, Co-Founder, Director of Government Affairs
As Director of Government Affairs, Mr. Burkes ensures that abuse-deterrent packaging is on the radar screen of elected officials and industry lobbyists. He is a co-founder of Gatekeeper Innovation and a member of the National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse, and he has a strong presence in the Sacramento political scene. Mr. Burkes is a member of the Sacramento chapter of the Entrepreneurs Organization, a global peer-to-peer network of business owners. He is also a member of the Young Entrepreneurs Group, and he played an active role in the Sacramento Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA) during its early days as an incubator of innovation. Mr. Burkes received his degree in Geography from California State University, Sacramento, where he was President of the Xi Phi Chi fraternity. Mr. Burke has been featured for his entrepreneurship on Fox News, Forbes and Inc. magazine.
Keith Degner, Executive Vice President of Sales
Keith Degner, Executive Vice President of Sales, is focused on providing medication safe storage in the health plan space. An accomplished executive with over 20 years of experience in the medical device manufacturing and home supply provider spaces, Mr. Degner is known throughout the industry for building creative, collaborative teams and forward-thinking programs that deliver a competitive edge. Before joining Gatekeeper Innovation, Inc., Mr. Degner was Vice President of National Accounts for Shield HealthCare, where he established Shield’s first national accounts team. He developed Shield’s Managed Care value proposition, sales cycle progression, and proof of concept through successfully closing national and regional MCO contracts.
Mr. Degner is focused on building relationships and negotiating contracts with payers as they look to include the Safer Lock and Rx Locking Cap products into their health care delivery systems. He has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and a B.S. in Business Administration from California State University, Chico.
David P. Creen, Executive Vice President of Sales
David Creen, EVP of Sales, is focused on building relationships and negotiating contracts in the pharma and health plan space as payers look to include the Safer Lock and Rx Locking Cap products into their health care delivery systems. Mr. Creen brings extensive knowledge of the health care and technology platform market including employers, brokers, unions, health plans, pharmacy benefit managers, provider networks and academia. Previously, Mr. Creen served as Vice President of Business Development at Perspective Partners, LLC, an innovator in integrated benefits decision support. He has many years of senior management experience at Benefitfocus, Inc., the largest healthcare benefits software provider and Pfizer, Inc., the world’s largest research-based biomedical and pharmaceutical company. Mr. Creen earned his BS in Biology and English from St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN and a certificate in Marketing from the Harvard School of Public Health.
